Fish are not meat! Remember that and you will be on the right path towards taking good care of the fresh fish you bring home. Good fish storage at home is instrumental towards making sure that your fish stays fresh, ready and safe to eat. When dealing with fresh fish, remember that the sooner you eat it, the better it will taste. When you bring fresh fish home, always make sure you remove it from the store wrapping, wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove any debris and then wash it with cool water before patting it dry. It should then be wrapped in wax paper and placed in an air tight container. When it comes to fish safety, make sure that you keep it in temperatures that are at most 1-2°C degrees Celsius. If the fish is not going to be consumed immediately, freeze it as soon as possible. You'll find that when you freeze fish, you are not only preparing it for storage but you are also making sure that possible harmful bacteria are destroyed thus preventing it from spoilage. In order to freeze fish, dip the fish in ice water before placing it in the freezer. Repeat this several times to maximize the protective layer of ice that it will acquire. Another way to store fish is to first clean it then rub it with turmeric, salt and a dash of vinegar.
